Port Macquarie-Hastings Council introduces Smoke Free Beaches the right way.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Shire Council has introduced a Smoke-Free Beaches policy the right way with No BuTTs Personal Ashtrays.

Personal Ashtrays from No BuTTs are being distributed by Life-guards and council employees at beach sites, kiosks and council offices within Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to encourage smokers to consider the impact of their smoking not only on other beach goers but also the environment.

While the 'Smoke Free' policy will apply to all beaches in the local government area, the focus will initially be on the region's patrolled beaches and other popular beaches such as Shelly Beach in Port Macquarie and Pilot Beach in Dunbogan.

Council is erecting signage to advise people that the beaches are now 'Smoke Free' and is also distributing stickers and bookmarks carrying the 'Butt out! Others about' message. Free sunscreen sachets carrying the 'Smoke Free' logo as well as Council's "Move Eat Live Well" logos will be available from beach kiosks and lifeguard towers.

Free No BuTTs Personal Ashtrays/Butt Bins are also available to help smokers butt out responsibly and to avoid butt litter

State Government legislation that came into effect in January this year made it an offence to smoke on the beach during organised sporting events such as surf life saving carnivals and competitions

Council's policy prohibits smoking on the beach at any time however it will be taking an approach that is educative and supportive to encourage people to butt out when on the beach rather than strictly enforcing the policy.

"It's simply idiotic to proclaim Smoke Free Beaches and believe - or hope - that smokers won't continue to light up, because they will - and that is a fact that Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has taken into consideration as they've introduced their Smoke-Free Beaches policy, which has been a resounding success." said Jack Jacobson, No BuTTs Managing Director.

"Sadly, there are more than a few local government departments that have taken an unrealistic and blunt approach to Smoke Free Beaches - and inevitably all they achieve is a further disenfranchisement of smokers with a resultant dramatic increase cigarette butt litter as smokers are forced to "go elsewhere" for a smoke - or even walk into the water to have their cigarette - either of which is exactly what they'll do."

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council - Smoke Free Beaches and Butt Litter Free Beaches
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's educational and inclusive approach to Smoke Free Beaches assists in giving smokers the ability to safely, easily and responsibly dispose of their butts, wherever they go to smoke - and from that point on eliminate their cigarette butt littering forever.

"Port Macquarie-Hastings Council exemplifies the right way to introduce Smoke Free Beaches - and they should be commended for their environmental initiative." said No BuTTs Managing Director, Jack Jacobson.

Over 99% of smokers permanently stop littering their butts when introduced to No BuTTs Personal Ashtrays.

"The response from the public to this initiative has been 100% positive and we're delighted to see a dramatic drop in smoking on the beach and simultaneously a significant decrease in the cigarette butt litter that previously occured on our beaches." said a Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Spokesperson.

Port Macquarie is located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, about 390 km north of Sydney, nestled between the Hastings River and the Pacific Ocean.

Smoke-Free Beaches are being introduced by authorities all over the world.  No BuTTs Personal Ashtrays encourage all stake-holders to play their part in the successful implementaion of Smoke Free Beaches policies whilst giving smokers the ability to permanently eliminate their cigarette butt litter wherever they go and wherever they smoke.
